The primary teachers new salary structure is set to bring changes to the basic pay of government primary school teachers in Bangladesh. Under the proposed National Pay Scale 2026, both head teachers and assistant teachers are expected to receive higher basic salaries than under the existing structure.
Primary Teachers New Salary Structure
For head teachers placed in Grade 10, the new basic salary will start at Tk 32,000. With regular increments, the basic salary can go up to Tk 77,300.

Assistant teachers in Grade 13 will also see a significant change. Their basic salary will start at Tk 24,000 under the new structure and can reach Tk 58,000 at the highest level.
The figures come from an analysis of the grade-based salary structure under the National Pay Scale 2026.
What Will Head Teachers Earn Under the New Pay Scale?
At present, Grade 10 has a basic salary range of Tk 16,000 to Tk 38,640. Under the new pay scale, that range is expected to increase to Tk 32,000 to Tk 77,300.
This means the starting basic salary would double compared with the current entry-level amount.
However, the process of placing primary school head teachers in Grade 10 has not yet been completed. As a result, many head teachers have not started receiving the Grade 10 salary through the regular payment system.
The matter is still being processed. A letter has reportedly been sent to the Ministry of Finance seeking instructions to include the Grade 10 salary structure in the electronic fund transfer system. Any amount due from the earlier period would be paid as arrears after the process is completed.
Salary May Increase in Several Steps
The full increase may not come at once. The new salary structure is expected to be implemented in phases.
In the first phase, the current basic salary of Tk 16,000 would increase by 50 percent. That would take the basic salary to Tk 24,000.
In the second phase, another Tk 4,000 would be added, bringing the basic salary to Tk 28,000.
In the third phase, a further Tk 4,000 increase would take the basic salary to Tk 32,000.
So, the final basic salary under the new structure would be Tk 32,000 for the entry level of Grade 10.
The actual monthly income would be higher because teachers also receive allowances along with their basic salary.
House Rent and Other Allowances | Primary Teachers New Salary Structure
A teacher’s total monthly income does not depend only on the basic salary. House rent, medical allowance and other applicable benefits are also added.
When the basic salary increases, the amount of house rent may also rise according to the applicable rules.
As a result, a Grade 10 head teacher or other government employee could receive more than Tk 50,000 in total salary and allowances after the new structure is fully applied, depending on the applicable benefits.
What About Assistant Teachers?
Assistant teachers are placed in Grade 13 under the existing structure. At present, the basic salary in this grade ranges from Tk 11,000 to Tk 26,590.
Under the National Pay Scale 2026, the Grade 13 basic salary is expected to range from Tk 24,000 to Tk 58,000.
The entry-level basic salary would therefore rise by about 118 percent compared with the current starting figure.
The increase would be particularly noticeable for teachers who are newly appointed under the new salary structure.
How Much Will Assistant Teachers Receive in the First Phase?
The full Tk 24,000 basic salary may not be available immediately if the new pay scale is introduced in stages.
During the first phase, the basic salary of an assistant teacher would be Tk 17,500.
Once all phases are implemented, the basic salary would reach Tk 24,000 at the entry level. House rent, medical allowance and other benefits would then be added to the basic salary.
With these allowances included, the total monthly income could be close to Tk 40,000, depending on the applicable rates and benefits.
Teachers Raise Concerns About the New Structure
Although the new pay scale has been welcomed by many teachers, there are also concerns about how the increase will work in practice.
Some teachers believe that newly appointed teachers may receive greater benefits compared with those who have already spent years in the profession.
Another concern is the phased implementation of the salary structure. Teachers may have to wait until all phases are completed before receiving the full benefit of the revised pay scale.
For many teachers, the demand for a new pay scale has been a long-standing issue. The announcement of a new structure has therefore created expectations among government primary school teachers.
At the same time, teachers want the implementation process to be clear and fair for both existing and newly appointed employees.
Changes in Head Teacher Recruitment
There is also a proposed change in the recruitment process for primary school head teachers.
Previously, 65 percent of head teacher posts were filled through promotion from assistant teachers, while 35 percent were filled through direct recruitment.
Under the proposed new arrangement, 80 percent of head teacher posts would be filled through promotion from assistant teachers. The remaining 20 percent would be available for direct recruitment.
However, no official notification has been issued yet on this change. The matter is still under process.
What the New Pay Scale Could Mean for Primary Teachers
The National Pay Scale 2026 could bring a major change to the salary structure of government primary school teachers.
For head teachers, the Grade 10 starting basic salary would increase from Tk 16,000 to Tk 32,000. For Grade 13 assistant teachers, the starting basic salary would rise from Tk 11,000 to Tk 24,000.
The final benefit, however, will depend on how and when the new structure is implemented.
Teachers will also need to wait for the official rules and government notifications before the revised salary and recruitment arrangements can be considered fully effective.
